FULL SPEED Author: Janet Evanovich and Charlotte Hughes ISBN:0312983298 9/2003 CONTEMPORARY Publisher: ST. MARTIN'S
This is the first book that I have ever read by the Evanovich/Hughes writing team, and quite honestly, I feel as though I landed in the middle of a story when I started this book....like perhaps I was missing some important background information. The two main characters, Jamie Swift and Max Holt, are being pursued by the "Mob", while they are trying to track down and expose a corrupt Minister, Reverend Harlan Rawlins, who has an eye for fast women. In order to get the "scoop" for her hometown newspaper, Jamie dresses up as a prostitute and goes to the Reverend for "counseling". He mysteriously dies in the middle of their counseling session. His death made no sense to me, since the people who killed him were also squeezing a small fortune out of him every month. Jamie and Max get the majority of their information from Max's car computer, Muffin, who is described as being a computer who is capable of human emotions, and she is also menopausal. (Remember the kiddie show "Knight Rider"? Exactly the same premise). Max and Jamie also go out and talk to the car, Muffin, instead of each other whenever they have personal problems....or, they talk to the scraggly old dog, Fleas. Over all, to sum up the readability of this book...it reminds me of an old Chinese meal cliché. An hour after I read it, I couldn't really remember what it was all about. This book felt stilted and forced, and there were exactly zero love scenes between the characters in the book. This book felt more like a Nancy Drew with a little bit of sexual tension thrown in. For fans of the Evanovich/Hughes team, I'm sure that this will be a welcome addition to the Jamie Swift and Max Holt saga. However, if you are considering this book because you want to read an emotionally charged, riveting romance, you'd better take a pass on this one. There are two other "Full" books in this series so far, FULL HOUSE, and FULL TILT. Geni |
