We finally have Isabella’s happily-ever-after, but you won’t be lost if you don’t read the previous books in the series. However, I’m one of those people that just loves to read them in order, because the family dynamic is something I can’t get enough of when it comes to series of any kind. Isabella Masters has been on the run from bad men for a while now, and under those circumstances, it is imperative she hides her identity well. When we meet her, she’s traveling towards London, a place she doesn’t want to go, under the assumed name of Smith and as a child nurse to baby Joey. Mark Smythe, the newly minted Duke of Strattington, is on his way to London as well, trying to adjust to his circumstances of inheriting a dukedom after his uncle and his cousin die. Not expecting it nor wanting the responsibility, he has a hard time accepting and adjusting to the life he must now embrace. Our hero and heroine encounter each other one night as both are trying to find some rest and peace after a long day of travel. Their first meeting is full of funny double entendre; yet, by the end of the night, we can’t help but like both of these characters in spite of their holding back their real identities from one another. From that point on, Ms. Kent takes us on a predictable journey of assumed identities, chasing villains in a blue coat, and one nasty employer; but throughout all that, as I came to know these two so well, being predictable actually made the story more intimate to me. My heart went out to both of them as they struggled with their choices and their feelings for each other. As they both come to terms with who they really are and the choices get narrowed, their decisions become even harder to accept. Or are they? WHAT A DUKE WANTS is a fast paced, fun, and very entertaining read with a predictable plot, yet it will make you feel warm and fuzzy all over. Melanie Friedman |
