Claire O'Neal is a single mom whose life revolves around her teenage son. Returning from a college visit, Nathan is killed in a random, freak accident on the highway and his heart is donated to a man Claire doesn't know. Several years later Claire still hasn't recovered from her son's death. When she finds the name of the man who received her son's heart, she is determined to track him down to touch her son's beating heart. What she finds is Mason McKinnon, a burned-out musician who chain-smokes, drinks too much and has a sardonic, fatalistic attitude. Claire is outraged, and sets out to salvage Mason's life whether he wants it or not. As they grow to value and respect each other, they realize they could fall in love. But can Claire get over the fact that the heartbeat she feels in this body is her son's?

RRAH's THOUGHTS AND PONDERINGS:
Marcia Preston's THE PIANO MAN is undeniably a wonderful read.
The characters come alive because they are so well-written. Clair O'Neil is a strong
heroine who deals with the death of her son, and then with Mason, who is the recepient
of her son's transplanted heart. I know many of you will love this book. It's
touching, it's timely written, and it's a courageous work. But, it's not for the
faint. At times, Clair is overbearing and unlikable. Mason is mostly
self-destructive. The story is romantic simply based on the explosive feeling
conjured from the writing. But it's a hard read.
