Turn of the Century through the 1940's
The 20th century broke free from Victorian restrictions with a vengeance. Travel and communications progressed with leaps and bounds as cars, aero planes, cinema, and telephone systems entered the scene. It wasn't simply new innovations exploding -- new ideals were also taking hold. Women's rights finally gained support in the United States and expatriate views became vogue as great authors such as Hemmingway and Fitzgerald expressed Americans' disillusionment with WWI. The prohibition of alcohol also brought an era of corruption, scandal, gangsters, and smuggling, not to mention entertainment, fads, violence and wealth. And if all that isn't exciting enough, add romance with women in sensual clothing and stylish bobs and debonair men packing guns and driving cars and you'll have the wonderful romance novels that follow.
